Clavier Companion Magazine’s Recent Redesign (Giveaway)

Clavier Companion is my favorite magazine ever, hands down.  Each magazine features a great variety of articles about pianists, piano teaching, new resources, the latest trends, and much more.  I have been a subscriber for a couple of years and I love receiving the issues in the mail!

The November/December issue of Clavier Companion introduced a fresh new look and design.

Clavier Companion contains the same great content as always, but the structure of the magazine has been reorganized.  The heart of the magazine is now organized into three main sections:

  1. Learning & Teaching — covers the basics of HOW we learn to play the piano and how we teach it to others.
  2. Repertoire — deals with the many aspects of WHAT we play and assign students.  The folks at Clavier Companions created this dedicated section in response to reader surveys requesting more articles focusing on repertoire and how to teach it.
  3. Perspectives — will generate a broad range of IDEAS and discussions on areas such as business, psychology, technology, and other topics relevant to teaching and playing the piano.

There are some new sub-sections, too.  The new “Preludes” section is filled with short articles and fun tidbits.  In this particular issue, the “Features” section includes an article about a well-known artist (Evgeny Kissin) and an article about a great pedagogue from the past or present (Madame Olga Samaroff).

The “First Looks” section includes reviews of new sheet music, CDs, and DVDs as well as a brand new column called “Apps for Teaching” written by Leila Viss of the 88PianoKeys blog.  I love reading the reviews in Clavier Companion to learn about the latest releases from major publishers.

You will still find the Keyboard Kids’ Companion section near the end and the traditional back-page column Questions & Answersnow written by Sam Holland.

Clavier Companion is a bi-monthly magazine that offers two subscription options: (1) print subscriptions (which includes free digital subscriptions) or (2) digital-only subscriptions.  The digital subscription can be read on your computer through your internet browser or through the Clavier Companion app on your iDevice.

A Clavier Companion subscription is the perfect thing to put on your Christmas wishlist!  If you are brand new to Clavier Companion, be sure to visit their website and ask for a free copy of their current issue.

The folks behind Clavier Companion have kindly offered to sponsor a giveaway.  Leave a comment on this blog post to enter (tell me about your favorite books/magazines/resources for reading about piano teaching!).  FIVE lucky winners will be randomly chosen to receive a digital-only subscription to the magazine.  Winners will be announced on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

  1. I used clavier companion years ago and then stopped when I took a couple of years away from the studio to focus on full time church ministry work. Thanks for reintroducing me to another great resource. I love the updated use of technology and having digital delivery options.

  2. I used to read Clavier compaion at my old job teaching at a studio. Now that I work for myself I haven’t read it for quite awhile. I still keep up with information from Imagine magazine through the American Music Therapy Association.

  3. I have subscriber forever to this magazine and it has really taken on a professional look. I love the pupil saver section.

  4. I used to subscribe awhile back, and look forward to gleaning some new teaching ideas from this magazine. I really enjoy the eye-catching format.

  5. I have never subscribed but have always been interested in this magazine. I have snapped up some back issues at our local symphony book fair. They are an incredible resource.

  6. I have never subscribed to this one, but since I started teaching again I am always looking for FREE resources like this!

  7. I have never subscribed to this magazine, but it sounds very helpful! I usually get my ideas online, from great places like Color In My Piano!

  8. I am enjoying the teachpianotoday daily blog, and all their great ideas and tips. Joy, your website is wonderful, and so full of ideas for fun games and teaching resources. This magazine also sounds like a great way to start off the new year, by broadening my teaching knowledge and horizons. 🙂

  9. I am a great fan of internet sites such as ColorinMyPiano and Susan Paradis and glean many helpful ideas there. I have read a few issues of decades-old Clavier that were being thrown away by another teacher. Wouldn’t I love to win some!

  10. This looks like a wonderful resource! I am newer to teaching piano and appreciate all of the advice I can find. My favorites are various blogs (including yours ;).

  11. I mostly read blogs like this one, too. 🙂 I like teachsuzuki.blogspot.com also. She has great information on teaching violin not just relevant to the Suzuki method but others, too.

  12. I have just recently started teaching again after a short break when my daughter was born, and this would be the perfect resource for me to get some fresh new teaching ideas. Thanks for offering this giveaway!

  13. I have always wanted to subscribe to Clavier Companion, among a few other things, but have needed to cut back severely on expenses for my teaching. I always enjoy the resources from blogs such as this one, Teach Piano Today by Andrea & Trevor Dow, Susan Paradis’ blog, ComposeCreate by Wendy Stevens, and many others.

  14. My Clavier Companion subscription ends this month, so it would be great to get a free digital subscription!

Clavier Companion and American Teacher Magazine have been so helpful in my teaching, but I have gotten so many ideas just off the internet and blogs like Music Matters Blog, Teach Piano Today, and Color in My Piano.

  15. Several months ago I sent a link to your blog to a close friend who is pursuing her dream of creating an in-home piano intruction studio. She has more than the usual challenges. She is Russian, and although fluent in English and soon-to-become an American citizen, there are still “nuances” of American culture that can only be learned with time and experience. She is still a bit nervous about teaching American students, not sure what method/approach to use, and how to fulfilll the expectations of American parents. For Christmas, I wanted to get her a subscription to a piano publication that would not only instruct, but “encourage” her along toward her goal. Not knowing what publication would be best, I decided to visit your web-site, and my eyes nearly fell out of my head! Your offer is an answer to prayer! The Clavier Companion sounds like the perfect way to learn “how we teach piano here in America”. It will be of tremendous professional and personal value to my Russian friend, and I would like to nominate her to receive one of your Clavier subscription giveaways. Thank you so very much for your consideration, and for your wonderful web-site!

  16. Hi Joy
I receive a lot of inspiration from the publication The Piano Bench, which I received as a gift subscription for my ipad. I also love your website and Susan Paradis’ website for printables and fun games to play.
I am also pursuing my Advanced Pedagogy certification with the RCM here in Ontario, and I’m really into more ideas on how to teach the more advanced grades, so a subscription to Clavier would be absolutely amazing!

  17. I haven’t found any teaching books/magazines that I’ve liked. I’m a new piano teacher. I’ve seen the Clavier companion magazine before but haven’t had a chance to subscribe. It looks like it would be a wonderful magazine filled with lots of information.

By the way, what a wonderful giveaway!

  18. Whew made it !! I already have the subscription on the iPhone 🙂
I use your website as well as susanparadis.com most often !! Great ideas n resources !! Ty as always…

  19. I find most of my resources on blogs and online articles, and Colorinmypiano is on of my top places to look for help!
