Music Flash Class ($3.99) — for iPhone/iPad.
Music Flash Class is an app developed by a piano teacher Henry Flurry. It has been around for a couple of years now, but an update for iOS 8 was recently released. The new layout looks good!
Music Flash Class is an interactive note identification app. The settings offer a myriad of options to customize the experience. I love that you can chose to show or hide the timer. And that you to choose a particular range of notes to practice. Teachers can even customize and save their own “decks” of notes.
Other perks, according to the developer:
- You define the notes you want your student to drill.
- You decide if the application should test or teach.
- You decide how many cards, how long to test, how quickly they must answer.
- You decide whether to drill in letter names, solfège, keyboard mode, or several other options!
- You decide what accidentals, keys, and modes to test.
- You see (and save!) what notes were wrong.
The other thing that makes this app unique is the group game modes. In the settings, for example, you can select “Hot Potato.” Students gently pass around the iPhone/iPad as they attempt to choose the correct note before the Hot Potato buzzer sounds. If students jostle the device too much as they pass it to the next player, a buzzer will go off and the round ends (which encourages students to be gentle with your device). At the end, the app displays the number of correct answers were answered.

I just purchased an iPad and am looking for apps to use with my piano students. This app looks like a good choice since I would be able to define which notes to drill for my beginning students and be able to add accidentals and keys for my older students. I would love the opportunity to try out Music Flash Class!

This is great timing, as I have a student who asked me to recommend an app for her niece (also my student) to practice her notes over the holidays.
My fav feature: the option to select a range of notes. My student is still working on a small range of notes.
This is the first app I ever purchased, and one of the main reasons I purchased my first iPhone (a number of years ago!). My students LOVE the Hot Potato option — we play it in lots of Group Lessons 🙂
We use 1 to1 iPads in our school and this app sound like a wonderful resource to support an interactive learning! I love the idea that this particular Music Flash App Class allows the teacher to make choices upon the multiple activities to enhance the students’ learning. Wow! I love the feature that forces them to be gentle with your device. I know they are used to handling the technology at school, and they are never purposely trying to harm it, but I have had a student literally take my phone from my hand before (for about a second! Lol) so I appreciate that feature.

This sounds like a fantastic app! I’m definitely adding this to my wish list of apps. I love how customizable it is especially with the option for which exact notes to drill and the group lesson feature will be awesome for the sibling students I teach who get so jealous when the other one gets iPad time.

Flash cards always add a little ‘fun’ time to the lesson. While I do have some of the real thing, my list is limited to only the basic music signs and words. My iPad would love to help me out in this department!
