MTNA 2018 (2): Monday, March 19

[Continued from Day 1.]

8:00 Exhibitor Showcase: Willis Music

The Willis Music showcases are always worth attending! This time, they showcased a new jazz piano method by Eric Baumgartner: Jazz Piano Basics. It looks like a great resource even for teachers with little experience with jazz.

At this point in the conference, the morning was devoted to intensive 20-minute sessions, called the Accelerate Learning Track. Here’s my favorite session from the morning:

9:15am Bridging For Success: Inspiring And Mentoring Young Professionals, by Jennifer Snow

Jennifer Snow, the new Executive Director for the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy, gave a wonderful session presenting research and personal experience relating to mentorship programs for young professionals. She shared about the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (the California affiliate of MTNA) initiative creating a program called the Young Professional Leadership Network (YPLN) and the resulting membership increase. I’m very excited to take this information back with me to my local music teachers association!

After lunch, I spent some time in the exhibit hall before attending two afternoon sessions:

2:15pm Keeping The Spark Alive and Still Learning After 50 Years: Pedagogical Tips From A to Z, by Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield

Ingrid Clarfield is always a hoot! Her session was full of great teaching tips, fun, and laughter. I admire the way she so evidently enjoys life. Her students must have a blast with her in lessons.

3:30pm Celebrating Leonard Bernstein at 100: The Solo Piano Works As Examples Of His Pedagogical Legacy, by Andrew Cooperstock

Andrew Cooperstock presented this session in celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centenary. I was so interested to hear and learn about Bernstein’s solo piano works!

For dinner, I headed with a group of teachers to the Disney Springs shopping area.

We had a wonderful meal outdoors on the patio at Frontera Cocina.

We found our way to gelato after dinner. 🙂

Stay tuned for Day 3!

Don't miss a thing!
